What Does Ethics In The Aviation Profession Mean To You?

Ethics is defined as a set of moral principles: a theory or system of moral values (Merriam-Webster. n.d.). Ethics has a lot to do with aviation. In the Aviation field, we have to determine what is good and what is terrible to a tee. If we fail to make the right choices, people will die, but ethical issues are not always life and death decisions (Zuehlke, 2005). We have to know when to choose to ground a plane due to maintenance or even people not being able to fulfill their duties due to outside forces; oppositely, fear, guilt, and self-interests can prevent us from doing the ethical thing (Zuehlke, 2005). Our moral obligation is to keep planes in the sky and keep people alive. We also must be the best aviators possible and know the right choices to make in life-threatening situations. We have the training to pull ourselves successfully and others out of holes that should not be climbable, and this is all due to the ethical and moral choices we make inside of ourselves on a day-to-day basis.
